How does a nation take down a statue that represents the identity of those who recently conquered the area?

I have stated this from the beginning. This is development not war.
Syria showed us that war allows for the destruction of history, heritage, and culture without a response from the people. Syria is older than our recorded history and that history was demolished to make way for a new google smart city.
